 Classic looks to brighter future

Classic looks to brighter future

05 Aug, 2010 05:00 AM
THE Shipwreck Coast Classic's annual wintry time slot could be swapped to a more favourable summer weekend if the Victorian Golf Association approves a change of dates.

About 150 golfers from across the state will tee-off at the 11th two-day tournament starting this Saturday.

Port Fairy hosts the opening day of play before the competition moves to Warrnambool on Sunday.

Warrnambool Golf Club captain Andrew Keane said miserable weather had become a familiar feature of the event and an application had been made to promote the tournament to a warmer season.

He said a clash with a major tournament in Cobram-Barooga had reduced the number of quality entries.

"We've got no state guys this year which is a bit disappointing," he said.

"The majority of people who come to play are visitors.

"But we've got a lot of scratch guys, it's still fairly competitive.

Golfers with a handicap up to nine will contest a 36-hole stroke event, while B and C grade players will battle in an 36-hole stableford.

Women will also take part in a 36-hole stableford event.

Keane said local hopes Jack Redford (+2), Matthew Chisholm (+6) and Dan Spicer (+7) could challenge for the trophy.

He said golfers would be competing against the weather, as well as each other.

"The conditions play a big part," he said.

"It will depend on how much more rain we get but it will be pretty hard."

The scratch and stableford events tee-off at 7.30am and 12.30pm on both days.
