Top five appears set after Roosters miss golden chance

10 Aug, 2009 04:00 AM
SHADOW boxing may have to suffice for spectators in the last two home-and-away rounds after Saturday's results appeared to settle top-five positions.

South Warrnambool's push for fifth place was stopped in its tracks at Bushfield Oval by North Warrnambool Eagles, leaving Camperdown in the box seat if it can beat North next Saturday at Leura Oval.

Top-three sides Terang Mortlake, Koroit and Warrnambool flexed their competitive muscle with emphatic wins in round 16.

Cobden v Terang Mortlake

THE Bombers are counting the cost of another crash landing against the competition frontrunner at Cobden Recreation Reserve.

Among the big casualties of the 27.4 (166) to 9.13 (67) result were forward Brad Couch (knee) and defender Ash Couch (ankle).

Cobden has been unable to unlock the Terang Mortlake defence in three attempts this season, a point underlined by 50-metre entries recorded by the visitors which favoured the opposition 54-48.

It was held to losing scores of 3.8 in round two and 7.10 in round nine by the Bloods.

Terang Mortlake playing coach Matthew Irving attributed the big win to accurate ball use and conversion.

Irving said Xavier McKinnon also played a significant role against Cobden's in-form ruckman Levi Dare.

When Dare dropped off the contests to play a defensive role the Bloods countered by using McKinnon as a go-to player for run and carry through the midfield.

"I think he likes playing against quality ruckmen," Irving said.

Terang Mortlake made a productive start, kicking 8.1 with the breeze to the eastern end of the ground.

By half-time it led 11.2 to 3.7, then as the conditions settled late in the game, finished with a nine-goal final-quarter flourish.

Nick Couch was the standout onballer, kicking six goals for the victors, while Josh Baxter and Tyson Densley contributed a combined total of nine goals from half-forward.

"A lot of credit goes to the forwards for kicking the goals but the back six for the last month has been outstanding," Irving said.

"James Reicha has had 16 goals kicked on him for the year as a centre half-back and full-back. I rate his year pretty highly."

Young defender Connor Arnott also earned plaudits for his defensive roles on Tim Horan and Sam Dunbar.

Cobden's best were half-forward Tom Watson and defender Matt Buckle.

Koroit v Camperdown

THE Saints are looking forward to locking horns with third-placed Warrnambool next Saturday after a lively encounter with the Magpies on Saturday at Victoria Park.

Koroit led at every change on the way to a 15.18 (108) to 10.5 (65) victory, highlighted by a best-on-ground performance from onballer Simon O'Keefe.

The contest was punctuated by several ill-tempered confrontations, which at one stage late in the second quarter led to seven players being off the field through yellow cards.

Koroit onballer Ben Goodall was reported for high contact on Camperdown veteran Troy Stephens, which triggered a melee on the clubrooms wing. Goodall later accepted a one-match set penalty.

The third quarter started with 14 players (Koroit) versus 15 players (Camperdown) but the undermanned home side was still able to kick away with 6.6 to 3.0.

Simon O'Keefe helped Koroit control the stoppages while Andrew Paton made a successful return for Koroit, playing out of the goal square alongside playing coach Joe McLaren and rotating through the midfield.

Adrian Murray, Russell Whiteford and Nick Bateman were productive contributors for Camperdown.

McLaren was pleased with the attacking outlook of his side, as well as its defensive pressure. McLaren said he expected Meade, Simon Seddon and Tim Carter to be available for next week.

Warrnambool v Port Fairy

AFTER sealing a season hat-trick against the Seagulls, Warrnambool coach Adam Dowie turned his thoughts to securing a first win against Koroit.

The Blues nailed down third place with Saturday's 19.16 (130) to 4.7 (31) result on Saturday at Reid Oval, which puts them on course for a qualifying final encounter with the Saints on August 29.

It makes next Saturday's round 17 match against Koroit at Victoria Park an opportunity to make competitive inroads after losing by eight-goal-plus margins in their first two encounters.

"Yet again, we get to test that (improvement) theory," Dowie said.

"We'll probably try some different things this time."

Warrnambool underlined its defensive capabilities by restricting Port Fairy to a score of 1.3 in the first half on Saturday.

Dowie praised his back six, led at centre half-back by Sam Boyd, for its balance and covering work.

At the other end of the ground, spearhead Jason Rowan was on target with seven goals, while Tim Hunt, Aaron Searle and Travis Graham kicked multiple goals.

Josh Walters, Brad Bul and Aaron O'Callaghan were productive in the midfield.

Dowie said Warrnambool controlled the stoppages after an initial challenge by Port Fairy.

"They were able to get their hands on it a bit early but we had some really good coverage," he said.

Ruckman Tim Robertson was a standout for the Seagulls in his second game back from injury.
