The max factor

A FIVE-year-old showed what the South West Games are all about on the weekend.

Max Fahey was the youngest player who took to Terang Croquet Greens for gateball on Saturday.

In terms of sport, he had the ultimate package, led by his eagerness to participate.

Despite competing against adults, he wasn't out of his depth as he managed to score a point.

"I usually get a two or three," he said post-match.

When the beeper sounded to signal the end of the game, his competitiveness was evident as he said to himself "we won, we won".

Minutes later his sportsmanship shone as he sprinted to shake the hands of his opponents while during the match, he constantly complimented his teammate and grandfather Ken Fahey.

Terang's Max first took to a gateball court three years ago.

"I came down with my Mum and Dad," he said. "I just love it.

"I love getting points."

He also loves sport in general as he enjoys having a hit of cricket and a kick of the footy.

"It's my favourite thing to do," he said.

His point on Saturday helped south-west side Tigers topple Melbourne side Bilbies 13-7 in a match which included children and adult participants.

Ken Fahey said there was usually a competition just for children but a lack of numbers stopped that.

Two more Melbourne teams were supposed to join Bilbies and travel to Terang for the games but weren't able to due to a tournament in New South Wales this weekend.

Director of gateball Vic?toria Elaine Coverdale competed in the South West Games and was pleased to see youngsters involved .

"We're trying to encourage more people to be interested in the game," she said "It's a growing sport and there are probably 100 people that play in Victoria.

"More people play in the city than the country."
