SOUTH Purrumbete siblings Kyle and Jarrod Rethus can exploit a home-track advantage in the popular Victorian Country Series this weekend in Cobden.
Kyle and Jarrod help form a strong contingent of drivers from South West Kart Club (SWKC), which hosts the third leg of the six-round series.
Kyle has stepped up to junior clubman after lifting the 2008 series title in rookie class, while Jarrod is performing well in the junior national light bracket.
SWKC vice-president Chris Place expects more than 20 club members to contest the round across 14 classes.
Place said another 40 club supporters and a handful of SES volunteers would help run the meeting, with practice on Saturday and racing Sunday.
At least 220 entries are expected, with the bulk coming from Portland, Warrnambool, Hamilton, Horsham, Ballarat and Cobden, which host the six rounds of the series.
"Those tracks came together and created this series," Place said.
"It's proven to be very competitive and friendly racing. It's been a financial lifeline for some of the clubs.
"It is a popular series. We've had up to 240 entries."
Place said other country clubs wanted to expand the series but the existing participants were wary of tinkering with the successful formula.
"We've got other clubs wanting to get involved but we're trying not to create too much travelling distance," he said.
"If you made it an eight-round series a lot of people can't get to eight rounds and consequently don't feel compelled to do every round."
Two of the biggest racing classes on Sunday will be junior national light and clubman heavy.
Portland entrant Scott King is one of the leading contenders in clubman heavy.
The defending series titleholder, he is in winning form after success on his home track in round two.
SWKC member Luke Walker is a strong contender in junior national light and could be a podium finisher on Sunday.
Practice on Cobden's 970-metre track begins at 9am Saturday, with racing from 9am Sunday. Admission is free.
