WARRNAMBOOL Darts Association is hoping the exposure from the world championships will have an impact at a local level.
The association will start its 2012 super league on Monday night, with vice-president Paul Huismann believing there had been a spike in interest in the sport since the world titles.
He hopes the exposure from the tournament will translate into more interest in the super league, which is played in the Wannon Park rooms.
“It starts Monday night with the first round of qualifying,” he said.
“There’s a two-week period for qualifying, then we sort the teams out.”
The competition is capped at 36 participants, with players split into two divisions.
“There will be six sides, with three players in each,” Huismann said.
“We put the best player with a weaker player to even the teams out.”
Huismann said that super league had previously offered 18 spots.
“But then people who didn’t make it wouldn’t come back, so we decided to make two divisions,” he said.
While most competitors also take part in the association’s regular season, the vice-president said anyone who was interested in darts could try out for the super league.
There are 15 home-and-away rounds, followed by finals.
Any interested players are required to register their name before 7.15pm on Monday, with action to start at 7.30pm.
Meanwhile, the Warrnambool Darts Association is also preparing for its regular season, which starts in the first week of February.
“We are looking to try and expand that a bit,” Huismann said.
“We’ve already got one extra team at the moment, so hopefully we can get another one.”
