GARY Rohan is a strong believer in the saying 'a mother knows best'.The Cobden 18-year-old has been labelled as an AFL draft prospect - a prediction which wouldn't have been made if it wasn't for his Mum, Belinda."I tried out for the under 16 (Geelong) Falcons and schoolboys and all that," Rohan said. "I got cut and told that I wasn't good enough."I didn't want to try out for the Falcons again after that because I didn't want to be told I wasn't good enough again but my Mum said I should have another go."His mother's advice was invaluable as her son has landed himself in this year's Geelong Falcons under 18 team which led him to a spot in the Vic Country team.Rohan attributed both selections to a season with Cobden's senior team after he was cut from the Falcons."I had a good year with them," he said. After wins in Vic Country's opening matches, the side suffered a surprise 51-point loss to South Australia in Adelaide on Sunday."We were second to the ball all the time and they just ran more than us," he said. "We hit some form but every time we kicked a couple of goals, they would kick another one."After trailing by 15 points at quarter time, the visitors went into the changerooms with a 43-point deficit to make up.They were down by 44 points at three-quarter time before losing 16.9 (105) to 7.12 (54).Rohan featured in the best along with Cobden's Ben Cunnington, who racked up 19 possessions and slotted through a goal. While Rohan is enjoying the faster pace and higher skill level of the AFL Under 18s Championships, there is one aspect he is still getting used to."I'm over travelling at the moment," he said. "We played at Skilled Stadium in our first game then went to Tasmania last week and then South Australia this week."Our next two games are in Melbourne, which is good."The gun plays up forward and on the wing."(The coaches) have been happy with how I've been going," he said. "I think I'm improving every game."Rohan wowed the crowd in the opening match against Vic Metro by taking a screamer."My teammate kicked it long and the guy was just standing there so I jumped up his back and on the top of his shoulders," he said. "I haven't taken a mark as good as that one before."His athletiscism and speed are traits which have helped earn him the tag of a possible AFL draftee."I just don't worry about any of that," he said of the hype. "I'm just going to play the best I can every game and if it's good enough, it's good enough."If it's not, then it's not."Vic Country takes on Northern Territory at Casey Fields on Saturday.
