AT this stage of the season, Warrnambool Gold doesn't want anything but tough matches.
The side is preparing for its showdown with City Memorial Red in a fortnight, meaning it needs all the competition it can get.
It was challenged by Port Fairy Red on Saturday.
"We knew we were going to get a tough game because they've been pushing other sides and they've improved a lot since last season," Warrnambool skipper John Leishman said.
"We led at cuppa then they came out and got a few ends.
"We were six or eight down.
"After that we pulled some bowls out which were necessary."
Leishman enjoyed the biggest win for Warrnambool, eclipsing Bruce Elliot by 10 shots in the warm conditions.
The veteran's team won by 16 shots overall.
He said the 2008-09 runner-up had slightly shuffled around its side this season because usual skipper Kevin Boyd has been unavailable due to injury.
"He'll come back next week and we'll change one or two around," Leishman said.
"We've been bringing a few up from Blue and qualifying them in the Golds, just in case we have injuries or unavailability.
"In saying that, we've been doing quite well with who we've had but the big challenge comes in a couple of weeks when we play City Red.
"It's a good rivalry and we always looking forward to playing one another,'' Leishman said.
Before it takes on the reigning premier, the undefeated Warrnambool Gold will clash against Warrnambool Blue in a twilight match on Saturday.
"We always get a good challenge from our second side," Leishman said.
"They always seem to find something they don't find against other sides when they play us."
Mortlake surprisingly found something on Saturday as the side and Terang were locked on 83 apiece at the end of play.
Terang was successful in three rinks but a 12-shot difference in the first rink ensured the sides shared the points.
Dennington was too strong for City Memorial Gold, winning all bar one rink, 113-70 .
Timboon Gold and Warr?nambool Blue had a tussle at Timboon, with the highest winning margin being just four shots.
The home side was able to edge out the visitors 93-90.
As expected, City Memorial Green was unable to match clubmate City Memorial Red, with the reigning premier recording a triumph in every rink to record a 130-77 victory.
