FINALS trials for the Western Waves under 18 and 16 boys' squads begin on Sunday in Hamilton and Tarrington.

The under 14s are primed for their final set of trials the following weekend.

Western Waves regional cricket manager Stephen Field said yesterday all squads contained about 25 players, with selectors required to reduce that number to 13 by November 23.

"Players have been encouraged to take on a great deal more responsibility in terms of workload, preparation, commitment and communication this season and already there has been significant improvement in technique, fitness and effort," Field said.

"The under 18s will begin their trials in Hamilton at Young Oval, commencing at 10am, with the next trial the following week at Dahl Oval, Hamilton.

"This squad has enormous potential to do well, with plenty of players who have experienced state under-age play in the mix.

"Steven Reid, from Birchip, is playing Premier Cricket with Essendon and many of the players vying for the final positions have the ability to do something similar," he said.

The under 16 squad begins its final set of trials at Tarrington on Sunday, with a further session on November 2 at Hamilton College.

Field said the under 16 combination was coming together well under the tutelage of former Waves players Tim Ludeman and Jamie Fenech.
