Demons' suffer hiccup in finals' preparation in upset

10 Aug, 2009 05:00 AM
A TOUGH battle with Timboon Demons has seen Old Collegians nab a round 18 win over the finals side.

The Warriors led at every break and held their strongest lead at half-time, where they managed to expand the margin to four goals in the Warrnambool and District league netball game.

But it was only a single goal that separated the two sides at full-time with Collegians hanging on for a 43-42 victory.

Old Collegians coach Marg Morgan said the game was evenly contested but still saw room for improvement within her side which finished the season in eighth place.

"(Old Collegians) played really, really well and they got what they deserved," she said.

"In the last quarter, they (the Demons) got a few up on us.

"We created opportunities, but a few times we would lose it heading into the goal area.

"We probably need to not have as many turnovers at that end."

Morgan also said her side's fine form may have been a flow-on from last week's battle with East Warrnambool, where the Warriors won a quarter over the second-ranked side.

"It was really good for their confidence and they carried that into (Saturday's) game," she said.

Collegians goal keeper Rochelle Beer's efforts on the court, teamed with a strong performance from goal defence Jodie Maybery, helped the side on to victory.

Morgan said goal attack Sarah Alderson had been a consistent player throughout the season.

Megan Bullen and Sophie Cole were best on court for the Timboon Demons.

Morgan said Saturday's win put the team in good stead for next year.

"To end up how we did, yes, I've seen all of them improve," she said.

"They've probably got a chance to build up to where Old Collegians used to be."

In other round 18 matches, Kate Burt led East Warrnambool to a 65-24 victory over Russells Creek with a 36-goal contribution while Creek goal attack Sarah Van Kempen was her side's best player with 10 goals netted.

Led by Rose Delaney and Nicole Batten, Nirranda claimed a 50-37 win over Allansford.

Deakin University finished the season without a win after a 95-19 loss to the South Rovers thanks to strong goal contributions from Rhiannon Davis and Andrea Bridgewater.

Merrivale remains undefeated after a 59-34 win over Panmure. Merrivale goal keeper Lauren Aitchison was best on court for her side while goal shooter Eleanor Wright was Panmure's best player.
