Close call on first day; Last gasp victory and two thrashings open new season

KILLARNEY'S thrilling win over Purnim highlighted the opening round of Grassmere Cricket Association on Saturday.Purnim won the toss and batted, recovering from 4-26 to make 6-139.Nick Butters made 43 not out, Anthony Smith 19 not out and Greg Bull 33, with Butters and Smith combining to put on 47 runs for the sixth wicket.Left-arm medium pacer Daniel Jones, 3-19 off eight overs, and Damien McMahon (2-31) were the pick of the Killarney bowlers.Killarney was cruising at 2-116 in reply but lost six for 21 before Brendan Chatfield won the game off the final ball.Jeremy Sheen top scored with 48, Jamie Cole 23 and Jarrod Chatfield 15.Sheen and Cole put on 60 runs for third wicket. Purnim's best bowlers were Daniel Ryan (2-9) and Daniel Garner (2-27).Killarney captain Paul Cameron praised the efforts of his batsmen."Jeremy Sheen got the bulk of our runs with good support from our recruits James and Liam Cole," he said.In other games, Yambuk scored a confidence-boosting win against Panmure Bulldogs.The Buks made 5-175 on the back of Brian Wilson's 59 with Steve Gleeson making 44 not out and Glen Wright 47. Gleeson and Wright added 97 for the fifth wicket. Bulldogs' Ken Jones took 2-13 off eight overs and Brad Dews 2-28.Panmure made 8-132 in the run chase with Mark Roberts top scoring on 40, Tim Condon made 33 not out and Sean James and Tim Bryce both added 10 runs. Shaun Peterson took 4-24 off eight and Kirk Buchanan 2-13.Panmure Pups were light on for players due to James McKinnon's wedding and lost to Grassmere.Grassmere was tipped as a big improver this season and made 4-189 with Zeb McCarthy scoring an impressive 84. Brant Walther also made 48 and Craig Spikin 23 not out, with McCarthy and Walther putting on 106 runs for the third wicket. Tom Wright was the best of the Pups' bowlers managing 3-44.In reply, Panmure was 4-98 and crashed to be all out for 126. Wright made 40, Paddy Mahony 16, Kelvin Evans 14 and Chris Bant 13 with Chris Chambers claiming 4-17 and Ben Small 2-23.Woolsthorpe had no trouble defending 8-122 against Mailors Flat.Wayne Hansford made 22 and Josh Julius 19 for Woolsthorpe while Phil Edwards snared four wickets. Former Woodford cricketer Wayne Densley, who had not played for seven seasons, picked up 2-9.The Flat was missing a couple of its key players and was all out for 63.Steve Edwards made 15 and Nathan Bramwell 14, with Isaac Richardson claiming 3-15 off eight overs and Julius 3-18.
