TIGER COUP: Merrivale signs Gregg

19 Mar, 2010 04:00 AM
MERRIVALE has produced an 11th-hour recruiting coup, saying it has signed former VFL sharpshooter Robbie Gregg.

Gregg, who was one of the Hampden league’s leading goalkickers in South Warrnambool’s 2006 premiership year, is expected to make his debut with his new club in a practice match next weekend.

The 26-year-old, who spent two years with VFL side North Ballarat before joining Ballarat league club Lake Wendouree last season, would add significant bite to the Tigers, which had identified a lack of key position players.

Coach Stephen Kelson said he was delighted Gregg had signed with the Tigers for 2010 but conceded a few “little hurdles” had to be cleared.

Gregg, who is contracted to Lake Wendouree, had his clearance application knocked back on Wednesday but Kelson said talks between the two clubs had taken place and the mercurial forward would be released to the Tigers soon.

“There wouldn’t be a club in the Western District that wouldn’t want a player like Robbie Gregg in their side,” Kelson said.

“It is pretty exciting as far as Merrivale is concerned.”

Kelson described Gregg’s signing as “absolutely huge”.

“We just wanted to keep it low key,” he said.

Kelson said Gregg, a Richmond supporter, was excited at wearing his beloved yellow and black.

He said the star forward would have no set role this season.

“He might have a number of different roles this season. We’ll just let him work his craft and see what he is doing,” Kelson said.

“It is a good opportunity for him to have a kick with no pressure and enjoy the atmosphere the district league offers.”

Kelson, who was a mentor to Gregg at South Warrnambool, said his friend expected to continue living in Ballarat and commute for matches.

Merrivale, which finished 10th last season, has had a productive off-season under Kelson, who is returning to his former club after a stint at South Warrnambool.

The Tigers have been bolstered with several key signings, including Koroit premiership players Tim Carter, Chris Ryan, Joel Nestor and last year’s Saints reserves best and fairest winner Josh Sobey.

The Tigers take on Glenthompson this weekend in a practice match and then Penshurst next weekend. Both matches are away games.
