 South-west pair target rookie draft

South-west pair target rookie draft

30 Nov, 2009 10:22 PM
GEELONG Falcons manager Michael Turner hopes two south-west footballers will get a second chance to realise their AFL dreams.

Port Campbell's Luke Thompson and Colac's Joe Dare missed out on having their names called in last week's national draft.

Turner said it was disappointing the two Falcons players didn't get drafted.

But he believed the pair would stand a good chance in the AFL rookie draft, set for December 15.

"You can never be over-confident with AFL clubs," Turner said.

"I certainly hope they would stand a good chance. I thought Joe Dare would have got drafted (last week) and I thought Luke Thompson was a good chance for a late draft pick.

"But there were 21 (rookie) upgrades in the draft which left 70 picks, which is lower than normal."

Thompson began his football career in the under 14s at Timboon Demons. When he was 15 he began playing seniors under the tutelage of Adam Matheson.

It wasn't too long before the Geelong Falcons took notice and selection for its under 16 squad followed.

Thompson missed the middle chunk of the TAC Cup season after he was selected in the Victoria Country team for the under 18 national championships.

Dare, a defender, had his AFL prospects boosted after winning the Falcons' best and fairest.

Turner said he rang Dare as soon as the draft finished.

"He was pretty good and positive," Turner said.

"I spoke to the other fellas who missed out the next morning. They may put up a bravado about missing the draft but deep down you know it hurt them.

"In the lead-up they had a lot of media coverage and websites tipping them and with that comes a lot of pressure."

Turner said he would know more about the pair's prospects within a week.

"An AFL club may invite them to training, which is what they often do now."

The Geelong Falcons generated the most draft picks this season , with six. Turner was hopeful another four would be drafted as rookies.

He said successful footballers had come from the rookie draft. Terang's Jordie McKenzie was a rookie pick in 2008 and this year played seniors with Melbourne.

Casterton's Max Rooke, who helped orchestrate Geelong's 2009 premiership, was another who entered the AFL as a rookie.
