 Maguire likes Brown as ally

Maguire likes Brown as ally

THERE's one particular reason Matt Maguire is pleased to be heading to Brisbane.

He won't have to line up against fellow former South Warrnambool footballer Jonathan Brown.

"I've had a bit to do with Browny and I've played on him a few times when I was with the Saints," he said.

"We had some good battles.

"I suppose it was a relief knowing that I won't have to play on him or Fev now," he laughed.

Maguire scraped through the AFL draft on Thursday, with Brisbane picking up the delisted St Kilda defender with pick 91 ? the fifth-to-last selection and biggest shock of the night.

The former Rooster explained there were no nerves as the draft edged closer to the end.

"There was no real pressure going into it because Carlton had committed to me to train there for the next three weeks and had the view of picking me up in the pre-season draft or as a mature-age rookie," he told The Standard yesterday.

"There was always going to be another day for me.

"It's just nice to know exactly where I'm going to be come Monday morning."

The 25-year-old will fly to Queensland tomorrow night before meeting his new teammates on Monday.

Maguire was cut by the Saints after a series of injuries which limited him to 14 games in three years.

The former Geelong Falcons player had a metal rod removed from his previously-broken leg post-season.

Lions coach Michael Voss knew what that was like ? one of the reasons Brisbane threw Maguire a lifeline.

"I'm pleased that he had a bit of faith that I could recover," Maguire said.

"Having Michael gone through the same thing, he can really relate to the struggle I've been faced with."

Maguire was optimistic he could boost his AFL games tally, which stands at 99.

"I think I'll probably be able to play my favoured role, which is a key defensive post along with big Roger Merrett," he said.

"It seems like a pretty strong backline and I hope I can get in there and cement a spot."

Next season will mark the first time Brown and Maguire will play together.

Brown is two-and-a-half years older than Maguire, which meant the pair didn't line up at South together.
