GOLDEN EGG: Easter bonanza in HFNL

GOLDEN EGG: Easter bonanza in HFNL

THE Hampden Football Netball League looks set to start two weeks earlier in 2010 in what could be a major cash cow for Port Fairy.

The league has released its draft draw for next season, which sees action begin on April 3 ? Easter Saturday.

If the fixture is approved, several thousand people are expected to converge on the Gardens Oval for round one when Port Fairy is pencilled in to host South Warrnambool.

The first round would be split, with the Seagulls and the Roosters clash being the only match played on Easter Saturday. Other clubs would begin their season a week later on April 10.

It is hoped the earlier game would capitalise on Port Fairy's annual Easter tourist boom.

Seagulls president Jeremy Rae was confident the match would be a crowd winner.

He said the festive match was mooted last Easter when the club opened its social rooms to the public.

"The feedback we had from people was they would like to have a game over Easter," Rae said.

"It would be great for the community and the club. It would good to have a positive impact on our books early on in the year.

"We just are looking forward to putting on a good event which would be a bit different to your normal football match."

Roosters president Gary Walsh said he hadn't viewed the draft draw and the Easter game would need to be considered by the club's committee.

"We would be open to any suggestions," Walsh said.

He hoped the HFNL executive would consider holding an Anzac Day match between the Roosters and Warrnambool.

No games are scheduled for April 25 in the draft draw, with all matches set for the day before.

But HFNL president Bob Guiney said the league executive would consider changes at its meeting tomorrow.

"It will be finalised then," he said. "There might be a couple of minor issues which we will have a look at."

The draft draw pleased Camperdown Football Netball Club spokesman Peter Conheady. The Magpies' first game is set to be played against Cobden at Leura Oval.

Conheady hoped the round one clash would coincide with the opening of new social rooms.

"If all things go to plan the rooms should be ready for round one," he said. "We made the request to the league executive to have a home game then against one of our neighbours, Cobden or Terang Mortlake.

Two night matches are included in the draft at Cobden: against Port Fairy and North Warrnambool Eagles in rounds two and four respectively.
