THE Hampden Football Netball League (HFNL) has promoted from within, appointing long-serving board member Michael Farrow as chief executive officer.
With five years on the Hampden executive panel, overseeing umpiring and netball portfolios, Farrow edged out five others for the top job.
The 53-year-old, who was junior vice-president last year, will officially commence his role next week. It’s a part-time commitment enabling him to remain manager and secretary of the Warrnambool Agricultural Society show.
Farrow said he was prepared for a demanding second half of the year as both finals and the annual show fall around the same time.
“I’m going to have some very busy months around September and October,” he laughed.
“But I will have a lot of administration support in both roles.”
Farrow moved to the south-west about 26 years ago and has held several administration positions in local sporting sectors, including the Warrnambool Seahawks and Mermaids.
He followed his children Brenton and Erin to South Warrnambool Football Netball Club, where he was football manager for three years and president for one.
Farrow fills the chief executive title, vacated by Stephen Soulsby at the end of last year.
“I think I bring some continuity, coming off the executive (board),” he said.
“We had a very good year last year and there’s no need to make any immediate changes.
“With my administration background, I will be able to help things run smoothly and maintain good relationships with sponsors.
“I can see this league going forward.” Farrow has made an effort to watch all clubs over the past few years and will continue to do so this year.
He hopes to see a strong year of football and netball action, with close competitions and new clubs making finals.
“Most clubs know I get around to most games and follow most clubs,” he said.
“From now on I will be travelling all grounds to catch up with administration staff to see how everything is running.”
It will be a big year for the Hampden league as the VCFL launches its review into the south-west.
Farrow is optimistic about the outcome.
“We’re looking forward to being a part of the review,” he said.
“The changes will benefit all leagues in the area, not just Hampden.”
Farrow hopes to meet with all clubs individually next week.
Hampden president Bob Guiney said Farrow’s administrative and netball experience won him the job.
Star Printing’s Erin Fox, responsible for Hampden’s award-winning record, has been elected to the board to replace Farrow.
Meanwhile, Chris Edwards has graduated from his traineeship with Hampden and will now hold an official administrative role.
