YOUNG Warrnambool cyclist Matthew Lane taught his older competitors a lesson on Saturday when he sprinted to glory in the Glenn Cook Memorial road race.
In his first inter-club open event, the 16-year-old started the 68-kilometre slog from fourth scratch and managed to hold off encroaching veteran riders.
Fifty-eight cyclists contested the Wangoom course for the first round of the South West Road Series.
The course started at Wangoom, wound its way to Framlingham and finished with four laps of the Falls circuit.
Lane said it was a tough race.
"There were plenty of hills and it was a really hot day but I had my tactics ready," he said.
"I didn't expect to win, I was so happy I couldn't believe it."
Lane set off with a group of 10 riders, but they were caught by the third scratch bunch with three laps of the the Falls circuit to go.
The race came down to a 250-metre uphill sprint among 15 tired riders.
"We just kept working and caught the leaders," Lane said.
"I attacked at the bottom of the hill to the end.
"My legs died but I just got over line about 20 metres in front of the next bloke."
Richard Schilling, of Mount Gambier, came in second before Hamilton's Roland Evans.
However, the perfect riding conditions were marred by a nasty crash in the scratch bunch at the 25km mark.
One rider suffered a broken collarbone, while two others had deep cuts and abrasions.
Yesterday's incident-free 57km Greg Gleeson Memorial road race attracted 41 cyclists.
The second round of the South West Road Series was taken out by Camperdown's Chris Jehu.
Warrnambool's Wayne Collins and Mount Gambier's Scott Noonan claimed the minor placings.
The third round of the series is scheduled for Anzac Day in Mount Gambier.
