WAIT OVER: Summers' late arrival for Classic debut

20 Oct, 2009 04:00 AM
A CRASH here, an accident there ? Davina Summers knows it's all part of cycling.

If only the 2009 Mitchell Building Supplies Melbourne to Warrnambool Cycling Classic entrant could pick when and where she takes a tumble off her bike.

Just over a year ago the Perth rider sustained a serious and untimely injury.

"It was a week before the Melbourne to Warrnambool," she recalled.

"I was training in the Perth hills and I came off and landed on the kerb. I broke my arm."

The injury forced her to skip her Classic debut last year. So is she being extra careful in the lead-up to Saturday's iconic race? No way.

"I think crashing and coming of your bike is part of cycling," she said.

"If you worry too much about falling off, you're more cautious and more rigid."

Summers is one of five females who have entered the 261-kilometre Classic.

It eclipsed the previous record of female entries, which was two.

Summers is looking forward to Saturday.

"I know it's a really prestigious race and a community event as well," she said. "It's going to be a totally new experience for me.

"That sort of distance is going to be something new for me but I am quite a strong rider. It should suit me well."

The 30-year-old only started cycling competitively three years ago. Asked why she took up the sport, she says you only have to look at her physique to find the reason.

"I have really strong legs so I always thought cycling would be something I would be pretty good at," she said.

She has proved that beyond doubt, finishing runner-up in last year's national road series and competing earlier this year with the Australian road team and UCI track team Verducci Breakaway in America and Canada.

Her individual performance wasn't her focus overseas.

"The goal this year was to get some more teams experience," she said.

"Initially, being an individual rider, I now want to learn about teams racing.

"I want to learn how to ride for particular riders in courses that suit them."

While the Classic is a teams event, the women will be vying to be the first female across the line.

It's a result Summers is hungry for but the Northern Districts Cycling Club member is also wanting to soak up the event.

"I just want to have a good day out," she said.

The West Australian is fresh from the women's equivalent to the Jayco Herald Sun Tour, the Honda Hybrid Women's Tour.

"I got two thirds in stages one and three," she said. "Stage two was a 10-kilometre time trial. I got a flat and crashed, so that didn't go too well," she laughed.

"I was happy with the two thirds though because it was a pretty classy field."

The Classic starts at Werribee racecourse at 7.30am and is due to arrive in Warrnambool about 2pm.
