LOOKING more like a BMX rider than a cyclist has cost Xavier Gstrein a place in one of his favourite races.
The Camperdown teenager was involved in a pile-up at Shepparton during the Victorian Christmas track carnivals.
"There was a crash in front of me and three people went down," he said. "I was behind and ended up flipping over them and coming down on my collarbone."
The unintentional stunt on December 30 saw an ambulance called, with Xavier taken to hospital where it was confirmed he had broken his collarbone.
"When I did it, it was pretty bad but then they gave me some morphine and it wasn't as painful," Gstrein said.
"The worst thing was it was 40 degree-plus heat.
"When I flipped I landed on my back and they didn't want to move me in case I had spinal injuries," he said.
"I don't know how hot the track was but I was there for 20 minutes.
"I lost a bit of skin off the left side of my body."
The 17-year-old, who is wearing a sling, won't be able to get back on the road or track until the end of February.
He has been on the exercise bike twice since his injury ? one which was an easy ride while the second was more strenuous.
"I did a 45-minute ride with lots of efforts which was just as hard (as riding outside)," he said.
"I had to duct tape (my collarbone) to my body to keep it stable.
"It's pretty frustrating because you're riding but going nowhere."
Xavier is also frustrated with the timing of his injury.
"It's the nicest part of the year to ride," he said.
"I miss out on the Bay Classics and we're going to Adelaide on Friday for 10 days for the Tour Down Under.
"There were a few races I could've done over there."
He is most disappointed about not being able to defend Thursday's Saul Pasque Memorial in Camperdown.
The 16-kilometre race honours Pasque, a former Camperdown Cycling Club president who was killed after he was hit by a car while on a training ride near Geelong on January 18, 2005.
"It's pretty devastating I won't be able to ride in it because I think that's the biggest race I've won in my career," Xavier said.
"It's something I look forward to all year.
"I didn't really know (Pasque) but I rode with him a few times when I was first starting," he said.
"Hopefully a local can win it." Xavier tipped Dylan Hately, Jahd Anderson and David Tozer as the main contenders on Thursday.
The race is scheduled to start at 6pm.
