Women cricketers line up for a league of their own

A GIRLS' cricket competition should be launched in Warrnambool and district within a fortnight.

Organisers are confident the proposed weeknight program will be backed by secondary schools from Hawkesdale, Mortlake, Terang, Cobden, Camperdown and Warrnambool.

Its establishment is expected to follow a series of women's cricket activities in Warrnambool this weekend, highlighted by a Victorian Women's Cricket Association premier division match on Sunday at Walter Oval between Essendon-Maribyrnong Park and Box Hill.

Warrnambool and District Cricket Association junior committee members Gordon McLeod and Paul Azzopardi joined forces with Western Waves junior coach Vince Aston and cricketer Shae Johnson to develop the best formula for a female competition.

Johnson said yesterday Aston and McLeod approached secondary schools to gauge interest in a competition for year seven to 10 students.

With expressions of interest expected this week, she is hopeful at least six schools will field teams to contest eight-a-side, 16-over matches.

"We're hoping to get girls that want to play cricket to come and participate and it will be over a standard cricket season," Johnson said.

"It will be similar to super 8s but we're going to change it to 16 overs, which will give the girls an opportunity to bat, keep and bowl."

Johnson is hopeful the inaugural female competition will grow into multiple junior grades and a senior division, run in conjunction with the WDCA and Western Waves cricket region.

McLeod said the WDCA switched to a schools-based program after an unsuccessful attempt to establish club teams.

West Warrnambool and Port Fairy fielded girls' sides last season in WDCA under 13 competition.

With local schools already involved in girls' super 8s matches, an initiative of the Western Waves, McLeod said there was already a high level of student interest in cricket.

"All I know is there's an interest and nothing to harness that at the moment," he said.

"There just wasn't anything for the girls after super 8s. The encouraging thing from my point of view is so many of them want to have a go. A lot of this has been generated by the girls themselves."

The impetus for a women's competition will be heightened by cricket promotions this weekend, beginning with a Twenty20 twilight game on Saturday at Mack Oval between Warrnambool and Hamilton.

Johnson, an opening bowler who plays with Bundoora in VWCA competition, will captain the Warrnambool team.

Sunday's VWCA premier division match between Essendon-Maribyrnong Park and Box Hill will be played at Walter Oval from 11am. It will feature Australian captain Lauren Hayes and former national representative Melanie Jones. Some players will stay in Warrnambool for a coaching clinic on Monday.
