IF the Warrnambool and District Cricket Association needs confirmation it is on the right path with a proposed new girls' competition, its shining light is Hamilton cricket export Emma Kearney.
Kearney, 20, will line up for Essendon Maribyrnong Park tomorrow at Walter Oval in a Victorian Women's Cricket Association premier division match.
She is also likely to represent her former home town today at Mack Oval in a Twenty20 twilight encounter with Warrnambool.
Part of Kearney's cricket education was playing in a Hamilton's girls' competition, as well as against the boys in HDCA B grade matches.
After moving to Ballarat to undertake a physical education teaching course she aligned herself with Essendon Maribyrnong Park because of its affiliation with the Hamilton and Warrnambool areas.
"This is my second full season playing with them," Kearney said yesterday.
"I started playing second XI and they've picked me for the ones this weekend.
"It's a bit of a step up. There are some Victoria Spirit players in the ones and the standard is higher."
Kearney said she expected Box Hill to be tough opposition tomorrow in a one-day contest, describing it as one of the strongest teams in the premier grade.
Essendon Maribyrnong Park posted its first win of the season last weekend in a Twenty20 round against Bundoora Old Paradians.
The all-rounder said her VWCA club featured some promising young talent, including Clea Smith, Kristine Beames and Breana Binch.
She tipped Binch and Smith as leading candidates to take the new ball tomorrow, with Emily McIntyre and Molly Strano likely to open the batting.
Former national representative Melanie Jones is unavailable due to overseas work commitments.
One of the individual highlights for spectators will be watching Victoria Spirit captain Rachael Haynes in action with Box Hill.
Haynes, 22, opens the batting and bowling for her club team.
On Monday a free cricket clinic will be held for girls from 9.45am at Walter Oval.
Players from Essendon Maribyrnong Park and Box Hill will be involved, as well as Victorian Junior Academy coach Sam Symes.
Today's Twenty20 match is scheduled for a 6.30pm start, with tomorrow's VWCA match from 11am.
