Tussle for top position

08 Feb, 2010 03:00 AM
AN outright victory has allowed Purnim to edge closer to Yambuk on the Grassmere Cricket Association ladder.

But Bulls captain Shaun Griffin isn't satisfied with just second.

He explained his side would be pushing hard for the minor premiership, which is expected to come down to the last home-and-away round.

"We play Panmure Pups, then Yambuk in the last game," he said.

"Panmure will be tough because they're vying for fourth, so they'll be doing everything they can to knock us off.

"If we happen to beat them, then we'll focus on Yambuk.

"Whoever wins will probably finish top."

The Bulls belted a respectable 296 last week.

"Wangoom is a pretty small ground but we always thought 300 would be hard for them to chase," Griffin said.

The host was all out for a lowly 68 on Saturday, with Purnim then focused on gaining maximum points.

Opener Corey McKenzie (19) and tailender Shamus O'Beirne (16no) were the only decent contributors for the Goomers.

"We thought if we got them out early, it would be good to go back and have another bowl," Griffin said.

"We thought we could get an outright and we were able to.

"It was probably the best we've bowled."

In the first innings, Jacob McKinnon and Griffin both grabbed three wickets each while Greg Bull claimed 2-12.

Wangoom was all out for 58 in its second innings, with McKenzie top-scoring with an unbeaten 35.

Medium-pacer Griffin was exceptional, taking 5-9 which gave him match figures of 8-20.

He believed Wangoom was heading in the right direction.

"They're going the right way about trying to build a future by playing the young blokes," he said.

Yambuk skipper Steve Gleeson steered his side to victory against a determined Panmure Pups at Panmure.

Chasing 162, the visitors resumed at 2-24.

Gleeson posted his second consecutive century, with his unbeaten 103 and Geoff Blackmore's unbeaten 64 guiding Yambuk to victory.

The pair put on a partnership of 137 for the fifth wicket before declaring at 4-175.

The Pups were two men short in their second innings, effectively seeing them all out for 68.

Chris Bant top-scored with 23 while Yambuk's Rodney Roberts claimed 3-3 from two overs.

Mailors Flat was no match for Panmure Bulldogs, which set 8-274.

The Jets were all out for 159 (Peter Hunter 52, Rob Bleumink 33) on Saturday.

Nathan Shand was the pick of Panmure's bowlers, grabbing 4-41 while teammate Brad Dews took 3-42.

The Bulldogs batted for 12 overs and made 5-127.

Sean James whacked 45 from only 17 balls, recording three sixes and four boundaries.

Mailors Flat was served best with the ball by Luke Read 3-41.

In the B grade, Woolsthorpe batted all day but was unable to hunt down Mailors Flat's 8-277.

Woolsthorpe finished on 7-176, with Darcy Keast (44) and Joe Daly (29no) the main contributors.

For the Jets, Chris Woodbridge, Alan Wright and Steve Edwards all claimed two wickets each.

Killarney's 114 wasn't enough for Purnim, which resumed at 1-75 before declaring at 6-118.

Craig Spikin top-scored for the Bulls with 39 and the Crabs' Mick Walsh got 5-51.

Killarney was 8-81 in its second innings, with Brendan McMahon posting 29.

Liam O'Keefe snared 3-29 for the winners.

After being all out for 45, Wangoom dismissed Panmure for 111. The Goomers were all out for 74 in their second innings.

Panmure's John Meade got 4-33. His side needed 10 runs to win outright, with the Bulldogs finishing on 1-13 .

Yambuk's 216 last week was respectable but too easy for Hawkesdale to chase down at Yambuk.

The visitors ? led by Darren Web who knocked an unbeaten 122 ? declared at 4-322. It came after an imposing partnership from Web and James North (88), with the duo putting on 134 for the fourth wicket.

Yambuk made 4-44 in its second innings, with Murray Habel taking 2-9.

The Colts semi-finals started yesterday.

Panmure has the upperhand on Woolsthorpe after it posted 9-182.

Damien Maloney top-scored with 38 before brothers Riley (24no) and Jesse (22) Dalton put on a partnership of 51 for the fifth wicket. Hannah Auld claimed 3-11 for Woolsthorpe.

Hawkesdale looks set for the grand final after it dismissed Purnim for 79.

Daniel Whitehead and Matthew Bartlett both grabbed two wickets. Their side was 4-42 at stumps.
