Terang cements position as grand final favourite

15 Mar, 2010 08:45 AM
TERANG has cemented its position as favourite to win the division one grand final with a comfortable victory over Mortlake.

Despite an innings that featured five ducks, Terang still managed to make 172 from 56.4 overs.

Openers Craig Blackberry (39) and Tom McKenzie (56) piled on 90 for the first wicket, and number three Ben Grinter added 41 before a steady decline.

But the early end to the Terang innings didn't help Mortlake's fortunes as it crumbled to 4-26 at the conclusion of Saturday's play, with veteran Tim Keane doing the damage with 3-4.

Things didn't improve much yesterday for Mortlake as it was bowled out for 80, with Xavier Reicha (2-10) and Tyson Densley (3-20) picking up where Keane left off.

The only shining light with the bat for Mortlake was number 10, Tyler Schaffer, who chimed in with a much-needed 23 at the end of the innings.

With plenty of time remaining, and the slim chance of a from-behind outright for Mortlake, Terang went back in, but belted 1-104, definitively shutting the door on Mortlake's season.

Terang will face Noorat in the grand final, who had a less-comfortable win over Pomborneit on the weekend.

Batting first, Noorat was all out for 199, after making a solid start that had it at 2-81.

Captain Warren Attrill said opener Bernie Harris (62) had the score ticking over nicely, but the runout of Pat Heffernan for 16 "slowed things down a bit".

Part of the slow-down was also the work of fifth-change bowler Craig Sargeant, who picked up 7-19 off his 9.1 overs.

A late contribution of 44 from Shane Hutchins left Noorat with a decent score to defend.

But Pomborneit started strong, finishing Saturday's play with a handy headstart of 2-58.

As things crept to 2-100 thanks to a solid innings by Tim Place (60), Attrill conceded he thought Noorat was "in a heap of trouble".

But he said the stumping of Place at 106 off the bowling of Tim Attrill (4-51) changed the game.

"There was almost a steady stream of wickets after that," he said.

Pomborneit was eventually all out for 178, but not before a few more nervous moments as the last stand from Stephen Walters and Brad Hillman added 22 runs.

"I got a little bit worried there," Attrill said. He said his side was under no delusions that Terang would start as hot favourite in the grand final.

"They flogged us outright two or three weeks ago," he said.

"But we've got as good a chance as they have ? I reckon they're beatable."

In next weekend's division two grand final, Boorcan Dragons will meet Ecklin Frogs.

Boorcan defeated Princetown on the weekend, while Ecklin upset top-placed Bookaar to earn a spot in the final.
