A GAMBLE looks set to pay dividends for Merrivale Cricket Club with a near-full book of teams for the south-west's first senior Super 8s competition already signed on.
A total of 19 teams have entered the February 7 tournament, which has $2000 up for grabs.
Event organiser Brendan Whelan said entries were capped at 24 and there would be fierce competition for the five remaining spots.
"Teams can enter on the day, but we will be taking the first 24," he said.
"We were a bit worried to start with. Entries were a bit slow and with $2000 for the winner and $100 a team we weren't going to make a lot out of it this year.
"But then it picked up and we have had a real flow of entries."
Whelan said teams were not club or association dependent and a range of players had entered the the competition.
"We have had groups of mates get together who play at different clubs.
"It's a chance to have a bit of fun," he said.
If 24 teams play, each competitor will play three games on the day before finals. $500 will go to the runner-up.
Super 8s cricket is normally confined to primary and secondary school competitions, but Whelan believes it has the potential to be a winner among senior cricket circles.
He envisaged the tournament would grow into a yearly event. While teaching at Cobden Technical School several years ago, he led a girls' Super 8s side into the state championships.
"They came runner-up. It was good fun," Whelan said. "Super 8 is something which is a bit different, many of the players have never played it before. I think they will enjoy it."
The club will also hold an auction on the day with autographed memorabilia from Jonathan Brown, Brent Moloney, Valentino Rossi, Adam Gilchrist and Michael Hussey on offer.
