THE road to South Africa for the Twenty20 Champions League included a couple of stops in Darwin for the South Australian Redbacks squad, which includes Tim Ludeman and Jake Haberfield.
The south-west cricket exports will fly to South Africa today after making the cut in the Redbacks' final squad of 15.
Ludeman, a 23-year-old from Nirranda, was slightly surprised by his selection.
"I didn't really think they would take a back-up wicketkeeper but a few other teams have done it as well," he said.
"I'll come in if a batsman breaks down or if Graham Manou breaks down for some reason."
Former Mepunga cricketer Haberfield, 24, is a right-arm quick for the Redbacks, who have included interstate trips in their preparation.
"We did a lot of fitness work early on, then we had a trip to Darwin for 10 or 11 days," Ludeman said.
"We played a few matches against Tasmania and India province Maharashtra.
"We just got back from Darwin (on Wednesday) because we had another trip up there.
"We played four games against Victoria and two games against Queensland."
Ludeman said heading north for the warm-up matches was crucial.
"Just so we could get on turf," he said.
"It's been too wet and cold in Adelaide.
"It was good to get up there and have a practice out in the middle."
The glovesman was looking forward to watching stars who will be littered throughout the lucrative competition, such as South Africans Dale Steyn and Jacques Kallis.
"There's two groups and the top two from each group will go through to the semis," he said of the format.
"(Our draw) isn't too bad.
"We play against a Sri Lankan team first and their captain is Mahela Jayawardene."
Ludeman said the latest match-fixing claims had not featured in the Redbacks' preparation.
"Obviously it's a big issue on the international stage at the moment but it's one of those things that we all already know about," he said.
"We get a talk every year on it, just repeating the same things about how bad it is."
