WEST Warrnambool captain/coach Andrew Robb has been slapped with a one-match suspended sentence just days after a misbehaving district captain was reprimanded.
Robb fronted the Warrnambool and District Cricket Association Tribunal on Wednesday night on two charges — disputing an umpire’s decision and not taking responsibility for ensuring play is within the spirit and laws of the game.
The charges arose from West Warrnambool’s round 11 clash with Dennington last week. He was found guilty of disputing an umpire’s decision, while the other charge was dismissed.
WDCA president Robert Haberfield said the one match ban was suspended until the end of the year.
The ruling comes a day after Nestles co-captain Gavin Rogers fronted the association’s match committee after he received two warnings for poor conduct.
Acting match committee chairman Bruce Membrey said Rogers “got off lightly” and as a team captain he should have been reported rather than just issued warnings.
The association is clamping down on bad onfield behaviour.
Just before Christmas it posted on its website the spirit and laws of the game and recently tackled the issue of foul language.
“The umpires have expressed some concern at the frequency and tone of language that has been creeping into the games across all grades,” the website message read.
“The use of profanities in not acceptable and will not be tolerated. Some official warnings have already been issued.
“Second or subsequent warnings means a mandated penalty or a trip to the tribunal.”
Haberfield said the association was determined to make division one the highest quality competition possible and to ensure players and spectators enjoyed the game.
