Rebels still chasing maiden a win

28 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
HEYTESBURY Rebels’ chase of an elusive maiden victory continues today at Timboon.

The South West Cricket newcomer is yet to post a win in the division one competition.

With a backbone of teenagers, the Rebels rely on the energy and pace of their bowlers.

However, captain Simon Harkness concedes the batting order has been erratic.

The eighth-placed Rebels welcome Bookaar to Timboon Recreation Reserve today for the opening chapter of a two-day match.

As Bookaar is just two rungs above its host on the top grade’s ladder, Heytesbury has one of its best chances yet to grab its first win.

“It’s pretty important,” Harkness told The Standard.

“The boys would like to get one but they’re not too stressed about it.

“We’re just a bunch of mates playing cricket. We didn’t come in expecting to win the flag. We just wanted to be competitive, which we’ve done in some games.

“It’s been a big learning curve.”

The Rebels will be without all-rounder Travis Brown (unavailable) and middle-order bat Gary Castledine (injured) this afternoon. But two replacement colts should provide some fresh enthusiasm.

Joel Mariaty and Adam Doak have stepped up to the top side.

“Hopefully they bring a bit of spark,” Harkness said.

“Joel is a pretty talented little batsman and does everything pretty easily.

“Adam opens the bowling and batting in colts.”

If Bookaar starts with the willow today, the Rebels will be putting most of their efforts into dismissing Simon Baker.

“Last time we played them, Baker made 99 and Lachie Green made 42, so they have a good opening partnership going,” Harkness said.

“But I think our bowling has been competitive most of the time.”

In other round eight matches, ladder-leader Camperdown plays Noorat, second-placed Terang battles third-ranked Mortlake and Pomborneit hosts Boorcan.
