WARRNAMBOOL and District Cricket Association (WDCA) has backflipped on its decision to hold the 2009-10 division one grand final at Allansford, with Merrivale to host the season decider instead.
WDCA president Robert Haberfield said the association was approached by Allansford curator Rod Sheen on Wednesday night following a visit from Melbourne Cricket Club employee Scott West , the head curator of the Albert Ground in Melbourne.
On Wednesday he was taken to five Warrnambool grounds - Reid Oval, Walter Oval, Jetty Flat Reserve, Merrivale and Allansford - with WDCA executive members and 15 of the association's curators.
"The curators gained a lot of knowledge on how to work on improving their pitches," Haberfield said.
"He spoke about rolling, when to water and how much, grass species, fertiliser use, machinery, maintenance and demonstrated a new mowing machine he had with him."
Sheen went to the association after the tour of the five grounds.
"He advised us on behalf of the club that Allansford felt their ground would not be in suitable condition for the final," Haberfield said.
"He advised us that we might be interested in moving the division one grand final to a different venue.
"We decided to accept Allansford's advice."
The March 27-28 division one final will now be played at Merrivale. It is believed to be the first time the ground has hosted the season decider.
Haberfield praised Allansford's initiative.
"We're ecstatic with the Allansford Cricket Club volunteers and members who made a candid assessment of their own ground," he said.
"They could've said nothing and had the final there, but they decided to do what's best for Warrnambool and district cricket."
The division two final will stay at Walter Oval, while Davidson Oval will host the division three grand final.
Warrnambool's premier ground Reid Oval is unavailable to host the top grade's grand final because of an exhibition match between a Warrnambool representative side and an Australian masters team on March 26.
With one home-and-away round remaining, Allansford, West Warrnambool and Nestles are guaranteed to make the finals.
The original decision not to use Reid Oval angered Nestles co-captain Brett Eldridge and West captain-coach Andrew Robb, while Gators captain-coach Kyall Timms also weighed in on the issue.
The trio subsequently fronted the WDCA board on Monday night after voicing their opinions to The Standard.
Timms yesterday declined to comment on the new venue change, as did Nestles president Peter Herbert.
West Warrnambool president Shane Wilson was also unable to give his opinion, saying "we have been directed to say no comment".
