MAILORS Flat's grip on fourth spot is under threat after a dramatic opening day of the Grassmere Cricket Association's round 13 A grade matches.
The Flat, just 1.98 points behind third-placed Hawkesdale entering Saturday's match, has a huge task of chasing 303 for victory against the Cats next Saturday.
But fifth-placed Grassmere is adding to Mailors Flat's worries.
Grassmere reduced Wangoom to 9-85 from a rain-reduced 49 overs and is well placed to push for an outright result when play resumes next week. With Grassmere just two points outside the four, there could be a seismic shift with just one match remaining after next week.
Hawkesdale's 302 was underpinned by a 95-run opening stand between Dave Atkinson (64) and Darren Webb (46) before Jason Elliott (61) and Daniel Roache (28) combined for an 84-run stand for the seventh wicket.
Damian Jones was the pick of the Mailors Flat bowlers with 3-68.
The highly-anticipated showdown between top side Killarney and second-placed Panmure at Panmure turned into a fizzer.
After winning the toss and bowling, Panmure destroyed Killarney, dismissing the Crabs for just 96. By stumps Panmure had reached 1-48 with the dangerous Tim Hunt out for 16. But Panmure captain, the big-hitting Chris Bant, is unbeaten on 21.
Bant said his side's strong position in the game was due to his bowlers.
Opening bowlers Daniel Meade (5-48 off 17 overs) and Nathan Shand (2-22 off 16 overs) did the bulk of damage.
Meade, in claiming his first five-wicket haul, snared the first five wickets to fall.
Bant said he was surprised his side was chasing such a small target.
"Meade and Shand, they bowled well, they couldn't hit them. They bowled well in partnership," Bant said.
After losing the association's one-day final to Killarney, Bant said his side's form had improved.
"We were always pretty confident of backing ourselves in a two-day game."
He said he wanted to secure the win early next Saturday and then bat on.
Grassmere captain Chris Lenehan picked up 5-18 as Wangoom struggled to 9-85.
In the other game, a determined half-century from Aaron Peterson helped Purnim to 121 against Yambuk. Yambuk's Tim Bryce picked up 4-29 from 21 tight overs.
