YOU need both hands to count how many cricket clubs Brett Halliwell has played for, with his latest move decided at a venue where unplanned recruiting often takes place — the pub.
The Ballarat-based Halliwell was tossing up where he was going to play in 2011-12 but after a night at the pub catching up with mates, including Killarney’s Chris Fleming, he decided on the Crabs.
He has been a prized recruit for the undefeated side, hitting 235 runs at an average of 29.38 and collecting 25 wickets. He is also preparing to represent Grassmere Cricket Association (GCA) at Melbourne Country Week.
“It’s been really enjoyable and it’s a great bunch of blokes,” he said.
“We’ve got a good blend of senior guys and young fellas. We’ve picked up four or five older guys . . . so it’s good to have that experience.”
The 42-year-old is brimming with experience, with his career made up of stints at Woorndoo, Mortlake, Woodford, Nestles and College, which is in the Hamilton District association.
He has also played for several clubs in Ballarat, with his latest stint at Mount Clear.
Halliwell, originally from Mortlake, has helped Killarney to an almost flawless season, including the GCA one-day premiership in December.
Now the Crabs are aiming for the ultimate prize — next month’s two-day premiership.
“We’re cruising along but we’ve still got a long way to go,” Halliwell said.
“We are sitting on top but I think Panmure is the side (to look out for).
“We’ve been lucky enough to beat them by one run and we tied with them, so it’s been pretty close.” The veteran, who described the A grade competition as even, will open the batting today as Killarney tries to chase down Yambuk’s 8-203.
“If we bat out our 70 overs, we should be able to make the runs,” he said.
“Last week we probably dropped eight or nine catches and probably missed three or four run-outs.
“We didn’t take our chances but they still batted well.”
In other matches today, Panmure could record an outright victory after dismissing Wangoom for 74 in the first innings, with the Bulldogs to resume at 2-288 as Timmy Hunt (177 not out) approaches a double century. Hawkesdale (0-6) is in pursuit of Grassmere’s 187, while Mailors Flat (1-41) is hoping to chase down Purnim’s 209.
