Flat out winning flags

03 Mar, 2010 03:00 AM
HOW times have changed since Mailors Flat cricketer John McCosh first swung a bat on a makeshift pitch.

The 55-year-old former club president recalled having to struggle over a small obstacle course just to take the field.

"We only played on a paddock, which is so different to what we have in these days," he said.

"A farmer would prepare a paddock for the club to use during the season.

"I remember we had to jump a barbed wire fence just to go in to bat ... it was a lot different back then."

Mailors Flat Cricket Club is holding a 30-year reunion this weekend to celebrate its 10 association premierships.

The club was established in 1952 but its first flag didn't come until the 1979-80 Grassmere Cricket Association season.

McCosh, who played in seven premierships, said the three-decade gathering was timely for many older players.

"We've been toying with the idea for years but it's just a matter of finding someone to organise it," he explained. "At 20 years we talked about it and 25 years came and went. If we don't do it now, some of us might not be around for the next big anniversary.

"Some of the guys from the first premiership are in their 80s."

McCosh said the arrival of Grassmere cricketer John McDonald turned the attitude of the club around.

Mailors Flat poached the cricketing stalwart, who also brought his able sons to the Jets.

"We were only a social club up until the 1979-80 season," McCosh said.

"We approached John McDonald and convinced him to come over from Grassmere.

"When he came we started to have a nucleus of strong players."

McDonald served Mailors Flat as coach and captain for two seasons and will be a special guest at the reunion.

"He's a household name," McCosh said.

"He loves cricket. He eats it and breathes it."

The night of celebration includes a dinner, presentations and slide show.

McCosh said invitations had been sent to premiership players but all past and present club associates were welcome to join the festivities.

The event kicks off at Proudfoots on the River, Warrnambool, at 6.30pm and bookings are essential.
