THE predicted even tussle in the under 17s grand final turned out to be an uneven affair, with Dennington overcoming Woodford with ease at the Reid Oval.
The Dogs batted first on Sunday and amassed the impressive total of 4-171 from their 50 overs - a score the Eels were always going to struggle to chase.
Woodford bowled well but came up against a controlled and cautious Dogs top order.
Openers Liam Youl (53) and Matthew Gunther (27) set up Dennington early before Gunther's departure.
He was replaced by Jake McKinnon (61) and he and Youl put together a sizeable partnership to which the Eels had few answers.
Woodford suffered a shaky start to its reply, losing early wickets, including key batsman Nick Butters for 2.
Tight bowling from leg-spinner Korey Howlett (3-19) and Nick O'Connor (2-5) helped tear through the order as the Eels crumbled to all out for 81.
WDCA junior cricket director Gordon McLeod said Woodford played well but was outmatched on the day.
"Woodford were the top team for the home-and-away season but the grand final wasn't as even as expected," McLeod.
"It was a quality game on a good day and a good surface."
He said Dennington set up the victory with a good batting performance.
"Woodford tried a lot of bowlers and bowled quite well but probably lacked a spin bowler to break up the attack," he said.
Youl was named player of the match, having picked up a wicket to go with his 53, as well as getting a stumping and a catch during a stint behind the stumps.
