Camperdown recruit pays back the faith

13 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
CAMPERDOWN'S decision to recruit Andrew Williams paid handsome dividends on Saturday when the Geelong-based batsman produced his maiden century in a crunch South West Cricket division one match.

Williams single-handedly took the battle for second position on the ladder away from Mortlake, compiling an unbeaten 162 as Camperdown finished with 9-322.

Third-placed Mortlake, the competition pace-setter for most of the season, had the second-placed Camperdown on the ropes at 5-61 but Williams, batting at number four, was the stumbling block.

He held the innings together, finding an ally in good friend, captain Chris Laurie (68) as they shared a 146-run stand for the sixth wicket.

Laurie, also from Geelong, said he approached Williams to join the Magpies this season.

"I'm just mates with him and when I said I was coaching, I asked him if he wanted to come up too," he said.

Williams struggled in the first half of the season, making 114 runs at an average of 16 with 40 his highest score from seven trips to the middle. But since Christmas, he has peeled off 323 runs at an average of 107.66 from five innings.

Laurie said conditions were perfect for batting with a quick outfield, although drizzle did slow it throughout the afternoon.

He said he hoped the 322 would be enough to defeat Mortlake and seal a top-two finish, with one two-day remaining after next Saturday.

Fully aware of Mortlake's batting strength, Laurie said his side couldn't afford to think it had the game won.

"We have to go out there and bowl them out as cheaply as we can."

Mortlake has more to think about than just the imposing total it needs after fourth-placed Noorat claimed first innings points against Heytesbury Rebels.

The Rebels were dismissed for just 88 with Warren Attrill claiming 4-39. Noorat then raced to 2/103 off just 14 overs before sending the Rebels back in. At stumps, Heytesbury was 1-86 off 23 overs with Attrill the wicket-taker.

Bowlers also dominated the match between fifth-placed Bookaar and seventh-placed Pomborneit. Bookaar, coming off an outright win last week, was dismissed for 95 in the 38th over after veteran Craig Sargeant took 5-17 off 9.5 overs.

But the celebrations didn't last long with Pomborneit reduced to 7-26 before being dismissed for 64, having batted one short.

Bookaar, batting a second time, was 0-9, giving it a lead of 40 heading into next Saturday where it will be eyeing another outright win.
