SLEEPING giant Panmure awoke from its cricketing slumber to post a comprehensive outright win against Wangoom on Saturday.
Panmure resumed Grassmere Cricket Association action on 2-288 on Saturday with Tim Hunt on 177, but he was dismissed within the shadows of a double ton for 191, bowled by Leon Kenny.
The Bulldogs declared at 4-322 with the highlight the partnership of 202 between Hunt and Paddy Mahony, who made 93 runs.
Wangoom won the toss and batted last weekend, making just 74, but made a better fist of the second innings, scoring 164.
Nick Sinclair top scored with 45, Nick Kermond 34 and Mark White 34. Daniel Meade was the pick of the bowlers taking 3-48 off 18 overs and Paddy Mahony claimed 3-70.
The win guarantees that Panmure will again be the side to beat this season, especially after Killarney recorded its first lost of the season in a disappointing effort against Yambuk.
Panmure skipper Chris Bant said his side only had a handful of overs remaining when the last Wangoom wicket fell. “It was a bit touch and go at the end,” he said.
“Some days you just have to stick at the task.
“If you can get one wicket, you’re always a chance to get two or three quickly,” he said.
“Daniel Meade and Paddy and Sam Mahony all bowled well.
“We shared it around and the side is coming together pretty well now.
“We should be at full strength from now on,” he said.
Yambuk made 8-203 and Killarney never threatened to chase down the target, being dismissed for 120.
Brett Sanderson was best with the bat, making 25 with Brayden Buchanan 16 not out. The wickets went to Gary Bartlett (3-27) Rocklyn Miller (3-35) and Tim Bryce (2-30).
Yambuk then made 5-54 in its second innings.
Hawkesdale overhauled a testing target to ensure it will be a finals contender this season.
Chasing Grassmere’s 187, Hawkesdale made 7-195 with Darren Webb 69 not out and Jason Elliott 58, putting on a partnership of 96 for the fifth wicket. Chris Lenehan took 3-21 and Brayden Hotker 2-59. Grassmere made 4-103 in its second dig.
Sri Lankan duo Visura Chinthaka and Pathum De Mel put on a fifth-wicket stand of 94 runs to lead Mailors Flat to a big win against Purnim.
Chasing Purnim’s 211, the Flat were in plenty of trouble at 4-106 before the internationals got together.
Chinthaka finished with 75 and De Mel 57 while Alex Goundy added 32.
Purnim’s best bowler was Aaron Peterson with 2-38 while Mick Williams took 2-61.
In B grade Grassmere was able to get past Wangoom’s 6-220. The Goomers were well led by Matt Berry who made 76.
Grassmere finished on 6-226 with Tate Ashworth 59 and Benton O’Rourke 57.
Yambuk’s Jamie Squires led his side to a win against Mailors Flat.
He made 51 of his team’s 165 and then took 4-47 when Mailors Flat was all out for 120.
Killarney (8-97) had a fairly close win against Purnim (83) and Greg Bryce’s 54 helped Panmure to 6-243 against Hawkesdale (6-181).
