COBDEN'S gun junior batsmen Kaplan McCann and Zack Merrett paved the way for their side to win the South West Cricket under 16 colts grand final yesterday.
The boys both passed 40 runs - Kaplan 41 and Zack 42 - after Cobden won the toss, decided to bat on the Camperdown turf wicket and posted a highly competitive 130.
The Bombers were able to bat 32 of a possible 35 overs.
Bookaar Green's best bowler was Jack Osborne, who took 3-23 off 5.3 overs, while Sylas Merrett claimed 2-15 off six overs and Jesse Gaut 2-14.
The youngsters are restricted to bowling six overs each.
Bookaar struggled in reply and was 6-31 after 12 overs before being all out for 39.
No batsmen got to double figures. Opening bowler Kaplan McCann took 3-15 and off-spinner Jackson Rock 3-1.
Cobden coach Neal Simmonds has been involved with the junior team for the past three years and said the under 16 combination had been slowing building up.
He said he thought there would only be three or four players too old for the under 16s next year and expected the side to again be competitive next season.
"It was a good win and we've been able to build a fairly good team over the past few years," he said.
"Zack Merrett is a very good player and Kappy McCann has probably been our most outstanding player since Christmas. He's made a couple of half-centuries and a few 40s."
Simmonds said youngster Jake Reed also took wickets last game (6/7) and was a promising player.
"We've got two under 14 teams and having good numbers makes it a lot easier to have a good program," he said.
"We've got a policy of rotating the batting and bowling orders and giving all the kids a bit of a go and that's really helped bring some of them along. It's amazing how some juniors improve given opportunities," he said.
