BACKYARD cricket enthusiasts will be spread across Merrivale Recreation Reserve early next month when Merrivale hosts its Super 8s tournament.
The Tigers are running the event for the third year, with organiser Brendan Whelan saying there were limited spots left for anyone interested in putting a team together.
“We’re chasing 16 teams,” he said. “We’ve got about 12 at this stage so we’re after four more.
“Teams can have a maximum of 10 players per side.”
The round robin tournament, which features modified rules, including playing with a tennis ball, offers $2000 to the winning team, while the runner-up side will pocket $500. The Tigers will set up four grounds on Merrivale Recreation Reserve.
“Each team is guaranteed to play three games plus finals if they make it,” Whelan said.
“(Finals are determined by) runs for-versus-runs against, plus wins.”
Last year’s tournament welcomed 14 teams and was taken out by a Warrnambool Football Club (WFC) side, which made it back-to-back wins for the Blues outfit.
At this stage, the WFC team is yet to enter, leaving the title wide open.
Whelan said that enjoyment was the focus of the event.
“We encourage people to come down and have a look to see what it’s all about,” he said.
The Super 8s tournament will be held February 5.
