TERANG will be the Hampden area headline act in a new south-west Victoria senior men's basketball competition.
Terang Tornadoes coach Marcus Rees, 37, said a meeting on Monday night confirmed his new side had 15 players.
Basketball Victoria Country general manager David Huxtable said there were six teams confirmed as starters in the new competition - Hamilton, Portland, Terang, Mount Gambier, Corio Bay and Colac.
He said BVC already had successful summer competitions in the north-east and Gippsland areas and there had been positive feedback about the new initiative.
"Warrnambool has declined to be involved at this stage. They want to concentrate on Big V, see that as the pinnacle of their basketball participation and want to stay in that competition," he said.
"We believe this new competition will be a viable home-and-away competition. We have six confirmed teams, we are still hopeful about Horsham, Ararat has said no at this stage and Millicent is also doubtful although we have not given up hope."
Huxtable said teams had to confirm their interest before a final decision was made on August 17.
"We'll have another meeting or phone hook-up prior to that cut-off point and then we'll be announcing the competition's going ahead after that. Yes, we'll go with six teams."
Huxtable said a 10-week home-and-away season would play finals in the first week of February to be followed by state finals also involving the north-east and Gippsland regions.
"I would suggest that at this stage a women's competition is a doubtful starter. We really wanted at least five teams," he said.
"We're very, very keen for this competition to go ahead. We're mindful of the costs but the teams also see enormous benefits in playing a home-and-away format. I can definitely see the competition growing in the future," he said.
Rees said Terang was also struggling for a women's side with only one confirmed player.
"It's all about re-establishing a senior competition. There seems to be plenty for the juniors but not much for the senior players," he said.
"This competition will cover that Green Triangle area and it looks like running from October 24 to February 4, followed by state finals. I've been surprised by the amount of interest," the former Warrnambool Seahawks star shooter said.
