A TERANG combination yesterday claimed the feature women’s event of Cobden’s Week of Golf for the third time in five years.
The team of Heather Holmes, Janet Saunders and Marion Brophy took out the Cobden Cup with a score of 210 in the aggregate net stroke competition.
Holmes, playing off a handicap of 15, Saunders (24) and Brophy (32), each had net scores of 70, edging out another Terang team of Judy Carmody (net 66 off a handicap of 11), Jean Lucas (74, 26) and Aileen Clarke (71, 23) by one shot. Cobden Golf Club women’s captain Debbie Rix said Terang players had also won the event last year.
She said 54 players in 18 teams from seven south-west clubs contested the event in good conditions yesterday.
“It was perfect for the ladies,” she said.
“I had lots of comments about the course, the greens were lovely and the fairways lush and there was no wind and it was not too hot.”
Carmody claimed top individual honours, winning the A grade scratch and handicap sections with her round of 77-11-66.
Cobden’s Katherine Robertson dominated C grade, taking out both the scratch and handicap sections with her effort of 95-29-66 while B grade honours were split between Warrnambool’s Robyn Allan, who won the handicap section with a net 65, while Peterborough’s Eve Wilox won the scratch section with 90 off the stick.
Cobden’s Week of Golf continues today with the men’s four-ball better-ball stableford event and the women return tomorrow for a four-ball better-ball stableford event.
A twilight ambrose pairs event is scheduled for Friday.
The annual event finishes with the men’s 24-hole stroke event on Saturday and a mixed pinehurst on Sunday.
