THE hunt is on for a star recruit for the Warrnambool Seahawks and Mermaids in a bid to boost crowd numbers at The Arc in the upcoming Big V season.
Spectator numbers dropped last season, with Warrnambool Basketball Incorporated (WBI) treasurer Barry Brooks saying only 30 to 50 per cent of the stands were full.
"It's difficult to quantify in dollars," he said.
"Four or five years ago we had sell-outs."
"(This year) the crowds were people who were basketball orientated.
"We didn't have that entertainment factor for people who are not so basketball orientated."
Brooks did not think the dwindling crowds were due to the Seahawks and Mermaids being relegated to division one and two respectively at the start of last season.
He believes he knows what is needed start filling the stadium again.
"We're looking for a big marquee player," he said.
"We need the likes of someone like Lester Strong.
"At the moment the committee is speaking with potential coaches and I believe that is happening in the next few days with some quite exciting announcements with not only coaches but also players."
Brooks believed the loss of the Seahawks and Mermaids' major sponsor two years ago affected the club's ability to lure a drawcard player.
The Warrnambool Sea-hawks and Mermaids Basketball Club managed a $4189 surplus this year, which contributed to WBI posting a healthy five-figure surplus.
"Some of that came from non-recurrent income, like grants and things," Brooks said.
"I think we received six or seven thousand from the government for development work and it also goes into resources for coaches and referees."
He said the overall status of WBI was positive.
Player numbers in the association are believed to be the highest since 2001, when it relocated from the YMCA to The Arc.
"As a whole we're going forward," Brooks said.
"Our numbers have increased, particularly with the introduction of the invitational division one competition for women and the under 19 competition for boys."
The division one women's competition will play its last minor round match tomorrow night.
