McLean's golden anniversary takes a turn for the worse

02 Feb, 2010 09:53 AM

LOUISE McLean admits she has felt a bit like a drama queen in the last few days.

There was buzz surrounding the Warrnambool basketball export as her 50th WNBL match was approaching.

But after all the coverage and build-up, the Bendigo Spirit player never celebrated the milestone.

“How embarrassing,” she laughed.

“I was in the media because of it and it didn’t even happen.”

McLean was supposed to rack up her half-century of matches on Sunday against the AIS but suffered an injury in the Spirit’s Saturday night game against Bulleen.

There were about five minutes remaining.

“I was playing off my player and helping, then the ball got kicked out to my player so I ran to close out,” she recalled.

“She shot, then I jumped and I’m pretty sure I landed on her foot.

“I fell down and put on a bit of a scene,” she said.

“I thought I broke my leg because the pain in my leg was just horrendous and my ankle wasn’t hurting.

“As I calmed down, my ankle blew up and the pain was then in the ankle.”

She went to hospital in Bendigo on Saturday night, when it was confirmed that her ankle wasn’t broken.

“I have to have an MRI later in the week in Bendigo to see what damage I’ve done,” she said.

“It’s really swollen. I’m hoping I’m only out for a couple of weeks but in three weeks, it’s finals.

“It’s not looking overly promising but I’ll be doing everything I can.”

McLean is resting at her parents’ house in Warrnambool before she heads back to Bendigo.

While the Spirit went down to the ladder leader Boomers by 15 points on Saturday night, they defeated the AIS by 20 points.

Bendigo was sitting fifth before the weekend but Adelaide replaced it in the five after the Lightning edged out fourth-ranked Townsville by three points. In her three seasons with the Spirit, McLean is yet to play a WNBL finals series.

Bendigo made the finals last season but the 25-year-old was out with a shoulder injury.
