Down to the last round

31 Jul, 2010 12:00 AM

THE scenario for playing coach Tim Gainey and the Warrnambool Seahawks is simple this weekend - win and be a chance of making the finals, lose and be at the mercy of other results.

Heading into the final last home-and-away round of the Big V division one men's season the Seahawks sit fourth on the ladder, but third-placed Altona and fifth-placed Southern Peninsula have the advantage of playing double headers this weekend.

The Sharks play eighth-placed Sunbury on Saturday and Altona on Sunday while Altona meet ninth-placed Whittlesea on Saturday.

On Saturday night the Seahawks play 10th-placed La Trobe University at the earlier tip-off time of 7pm at the Warrnambool Arc Stadium.

The Warrnambool side suffered a devastating three-point loss to Altona last weekend but coach Tim Gainey said his players had been positive this week.

"We know the position we're in and all we can do is go out there against La Trobe University and win," he said.

"We just need to focus on how important this game is for us and let everything else take care of itself. We need to win to be a chance of making the play-offs."

Asked who had been playing well for the Seahawks said: "Nobody last week".

"We had a light session on Tuesday night with an emphasis on shooting. We focused on our game plan on Thursday night and we just need to respond. Thursday night was about getting our running going."

Gainey said his players brought a positive attitude to training this week.

"The guys are fine about the position we're in. They know we have to do this week and if we don't win we wont have to worry about anything," he said.

"Us and Southern Pen have eight losses each. We need to stay at that number and hope they go out another one. We can still finish up third or fourth. There's seven teams still in it and if we win it will increase our chances greatly."

The playing coach said all his players were fit and healthy with Tom Symons overcoming a niggling ankle injury.

"Everyone's right and 100 per cent with Tom's ankle now right. We've got a full squad so there will be no excuses," Gainey said.

"Our game is a bit earlier at 7pm because the Mermaid girls have the bye after finishing their home-and-away season undefeated on top.

"We're the main and only game so we need to make sure we're ready when we go out and hit the court. Our preparation has been pretty good."

Gainey said that so far the season had been overall pleasing.

"I'm fairly happy. We've come from last and fighting to stay out of relegation to being in finals contention," he said.

"From last to possibly making the finals is a huge effort and shows how hard we worked in the off-season. La Trobe has Kevin Anstey, (former Australian legend) Chris Anstey's brother, on their team and he goes all right.

"He knows the locals and will be keen to get down here and put on a show. La Trobe is also trying to stay out of relegation along with Keyborough so they'll be fired up to play well," he said.
