DOMINATORS: Mermaids despatch top-spot challengers by 40 points

06 Jul, 2009 04:00 AM
THE Warrnambool Mermaids are wrapping up their season in style after sending second-placed side Melbourne University home with a 40-point drubbing at the Arc on Saturday night, despite missing six regular players.

Mermaids coach Lee Primmer said his side's round 14 effort may have been its best team performance of the Big V season.

"It was very, very good team work," the coach said of his side's cohesion in the 71-31 win. "Nearly the best they've done all year."

Primmer was happy with the amount of pressure his players put on their University opponents.

The Black Angels only made 13.2 per cent of field goals for the game and had 21 turnovers.

While Primmer was happy with Warrnambool's efforts on the night, he wasn't quick to draw comparisons with last week's seven-point win over the same opposition.

Melbourne Uni's two top scorers in round 13, Claire Pownell and Simone Steele, were both out on Saturday.

"They were two completely different teams," Primmer said of the University side's line-up in the two matches.

"They're second on the ladder, we're first and we beat them. That's all I'm reading into it."

Primmer wasn't entirely happy with Warrnambool's efforts in closing the match.

"We were a little ordinary after half-time," Primmer said. The Mermaids scored only 26 points in the final half of play.

Forward Brooke Rudezky and guard Holly Greene stepped back into competition on Saturday night, taking 23 rebounds between them, while Warrnambool newcomer Alana Jones had a strong third match for the season, taking nine points and nine rebounds.

Primmer also said that with a small team, the Mermaids might bring two or three other players into the group for the remainder of the season.

Courtney Primmer and Samantha Kappl are expected to be back in for this weekend's away double-header against bottom sides Keilor (3-13) and Melton (0-15).
