Teacher plans for Angels home run

22 Jul, 2010 04:30 AM
Marko Wakim has pitched a bold idea to challenge the popularity of cricket and other summer sports in the south-west.

His vision still involves a bat, ball, gloves, runs and innings.

However, game time is significantly shorter than its cricket counterpart.

Wakim would like to introduce the Warrnambool Angels Baseball Club.

While towns such as Hamilton, Portland and Colac all have baseball teams, Warrnambool is still without a diamond and bases.

Wakim is desperate to bring the sport to the city.

“I moved to Warrnambool three years ago and was really starting to miss being around baseball,” he said.

“It didn’t take long to find out that there was no baseball in the area.”

The 35-year-old former Doncaster player has created a logo and designed a uniform, which will include a royal blue top and cap with red embroidery and grey pants.

He hopes to organise five friendly matches with other clubs in the region this summer.

The long-term goal is to establish a south-west district league.

“This summer is about testing the water,” he said.

“It will be educational and friendly and people will get to see how a proper game is played.

“The social aspect has to be a part of it. It’s about creating a new subculture.”

The Emmanuel College design and technology teacher said baseball provided a shorter option for people who did not have the freedom to commit to a two-day cricket match.

But he said there was no competition between the sports.

“It isn’t a matter of competing. We will just be picking up the slack,” he said.

“Just from asking around there are a few Americans floating around and some of my students are interested.

“Some people don’t want to give up an entire weekend.

This is just two hours on an afternoon.”

Wakim said he was in discussions with the Warrnambool City Council to find a home field over summer.

He said men, women and children of all abilities were welcome to try to sport.

“It is an exciting game to play, it really challenges you and fitness is not an issue,” he said.

“It is the best fun.”
