YOUNG Hayley Stephens will follow the footsteps of big brothers Oliver and Sam tomorrow in the Wunta Kids Triathlon.
While Oliver, 11, and Sam, 8, have contested two junior triathlons in their short careers, Hayley will this weekend face the starter for the first time.
The six-year-old has entered the under sevens event, which features a 50-metre swim in shallow water off the Harbour Pavilion, 450m cycle and 250m run. Mum Julie said the trio was excited for tomorrow’s Warrnambool Triathlon Club event.
“They can’t wait to get in and have a go,” she said.
“It’s all about participation and it’s a really good family set-up.”
Oliver is ready to go in the 10-13 age group, which involves a 100m swim, 6km ride and 1.5km run.
Sam is in the 7-9 year category and will test himself in a 50m swim, 900m bike ride and 500m run.
Julie said her children had been involved in triathlons for about four months after watching their dad Rodney compete in team events.
The Warrnambool Primary School siblings have been taking swimming lessons and cycling around the streets of Warrnambool to prepare for tomorrow’s competition.
Oliver and Sam will join the club’s junior development program in the coming weeks to continue their training.
The inaugural Wunta Kids Triathlon is an avenue for youngsters to have a go at the sport.
There will also be podium presentations for the older classes.
Registration for the under seven and 7-9 age groups is free, while the 10-13 and 13-17 entry cost is $10. All competitors get a showbag and there will be lots of prizes.
Registrations open at Warrnambool’s Harbour Pavilion car park from 4pm to 6pm this evening and again at 7.45am tomorrow. Action starts from 8.30am tomorrow.
