A YOUNG one on the way up and an old bloke on the way down is how John Reynolds compares himself with Nathan Krepp.
But judging by the weekend’s Victorian Country Athletics Championships in Bendigo, both South West Athletic Club members seem to be surging ahead.
While veteran Reynolds snared two gold medals and a silver at the titles, the up-and-coming Krepp collected five gold.
“I used to coach him but then he got to be so good I sent him to a bloke in Geelong,” Reynolds said of the teenager.
“Now we train together.
“I’m rapt for him to be doing so well.”
Krepp claimed gold in open shot put (13.63m), open discus (42.75m), under 20 shot put (15.25m), under 20 discus (47.07m) and under 20 hammer (40.24m).
The medal haul marked a career-best for the 17-year-old at a state-level event.
Krepp, who was surprised by his success in the open division against older competitors, was grateful for Reynolds’ guidance.
“On Saturday mornings we go and have a throw together,” he said.
“He’s been throwing for years and always has stories to tell me.
“He’s travelled around the world so he’s got some handy stuff to tell me.”
Krepp’s ultimate aim is to qualify in discus for the World Junior Championships in July.
“You have to throw 55 metres and I’ve got until March to do it,” he said.
“Hopefully I can.”
His discus distances on the weekend were not as big as he hoped due to weather conditions.
Krepp is enjoying his athletics schedule again after taking a break from the sport last year.
“I was hearing about results from John and other athletes from around Australia and I wanted to give it a go again,” he said.
Reynolds, who contested the 60 and over men’s category, threw his way to gold in hammer (32.57m) and discus (32.82m), with the latter a meet record.
He was second in shot put (8.85m).
“I probably ended up with what I thought I would end up with,” he said.
“There were something like 580 competitors there so it was fairly big.”
Other South West Athletic Club members who performed well were under 20 women’s competitor Kellie McLeod (silver in 1500m, bronze in 400m and 800m) and under 18 men’s competitor Ashley Ovens (gold in 400m hurdles, silver in long jump).
