FROM tasteful to trashy, the focus of Melbourne Cup Day in the south-west was on fillies having fun, regardless of their age.
While women from Port Fairy dressed to impress in cup day fashions to raise money for Moyneyana House, Hopkins River Caravan Park residents wore bad-taste ensembles from the op shop, in the name of fun.
The annual Moyneyana House fund-raiser netted about $1800 for the Port Fairy aged-care hostel.
Friends of Moyneyana House president Margaret Whitehead said the day was a success.
"It's a really good turnout. We've had at least 80 paying guests and all the helpers, that's 20 or more than last year so it's a good day," she said.
''We usually raise $1500. I think we've done better this year," Mrs Whitehead added.
The best hat was won by Joy Rundell of Port Fairy while the Lady of the Day was awarded to Janette McIntyre from Port Fairy, who was also celebrating her 47th wedding anniversary.
The cup day luncheon began in 1988 and it has been hosted at various locations over the years including Moyneyana House, St Patrick's Primary School Port Fairy and Southcombe Lodge.
On the eastern side of Warrnambool, op shop fashion was the focus.
There were lots of laughs being had as the small but vocal group showed off their outfits.
Hopkins River Caravan Park manager Pauline Stanistreet said the ladies had came up with some interesting fashions.
"(Organiser) Lorraine (Kelly) did say don't get anything good, it's got to look daggy," Mrs Stanistreet said.
