TOURIST bus operators have been warned to shape up or get out after a blitz at the Twelve Apostles national park found several defect vehicles.
The worst had tyres so bald it was put off the road immediately.
Twenty-six buses were inspected for roadworthiness by police, Transport Safety Victoria (TSV) and Parks Victoria officers during the Australia Day long weekend.
Drivers were given breath tests and had their licences checked.
TSV bus safety director Stephen Turner said the operator of the vehicle with badly defective tyres was issued with a prohibition notice and the driver banned from moving it further.
Police issued defect notices on three operators for bald tyres and one for having an insecure headlamp and indicator assembly.
“Bus operators must inspect their vehicles before every trip because breaches of safety law will not be tolerated,” Mr Turner said.
“Passengers are entitled to have confidence in their safety.
“TSV officers will conduct similar activities at tourist attractions throughout the year and bus operators are on notice to have their vehicles fully compliant with the law at all times.”
Parks Victoria found some drivers didn’t have valid permits to enter the national park.
Several buses were also found to have fire extinguishers which had not been tested within the manufacturer’s time frame.
“Buses cannot be used unless fitted fire extinguishers are maintained in operating condition,” Mr Turner said.
“TSV officers will be visiting those bus operators served notices to work through the safety issues identified and ensure the buses they operate meet safety requirements.”
