FIREFIGHTING runs in Adam Bishop's family.
The 18-year-old volunteer has been named the Warrnambool brigade's most outstanding member.
The former Brauer College student has only been wearing a fireproof suit for 18 months but is already considering a career in a big red truck.
His grandfather, Bill Pressey, has been a volunteer at the Mortlake Urban Fire Brigade for 53 years and received the Australian Fire Service Medal this year.
Mr Bishop was named the Warrnambool brigade's Firefighter of the Year at the annual meeting on Saturday night.
The brigade's officer-in-charge, Henry Barton, said Mr Bishop's award was based on a monthly vote, recognising volunteers who went "above and beyond the call of duty".
Mr Bishop received a trophy and $150.
"I turn up whenever I can and just do whatever needs doing," the apprentice builder said.
He is considering taking up professional firefighting after working as a builder.
One of the toughest things he had done as a volunteer was wearing his full fire-fighting kit while inside a burning building on a 35-degree day, he said. But that was just a training exercise. Max Smart was honoured for 40 years' service while Bryan Wills and Barry Smith were recognised for 25 years' contribution to the community.
