Teenagers behind bars for salon blaze

18 Mar, 2010 09:20 AM
TWO 14-year-olds spent last night in custody after being charged with a $100,000 fire at a Warrnambool beauty salon.

The Warrnambool youths, who cannot be named, appeared in front of a bail justice at the city’s police station yesterday and were held in custody after they were found to be at risk of reoffending.

Detective Senior Constable Richard Hughes, of the Warrnambool Criminal Investigation Unit, said the two youths entered the Koroit Street Autumn Nails salon on the night of February 26 and after failing to find cash torched the building, causing about $100,000 damage.

He told the hearing that the business’ operator, Nein Thi Le, was expected to lose thousands of dollars through lost trade.

The contents of the shop were not insured, he said.

Detective Senior Constable Hughes said it was extremely fortunate a passer-by raised the alarm or neighbouring shops in the arcade could have been destroyed.

The two youths, loitering in Liebig Street, were spoken to by police soon after the fire but were not arrested.

Yesterday one of the youths was arrested and during an interview he gave an inconsistent account of what happened on the night of the fire.

The remand hearing was told he later admitted to entering the shop with intent to steal and damaging the premises.

He said they squirted flammable liquid around the shop and claimed his co-offender lit the fire with a stove lighter gun.

The co-accused gave a ‘‘no comment’’ interview.

Neither youth attends school and both were described as extreme risks to reoffend, having been in regular contact with police for previous offending.

Earlier, the bail hearing was told that on February 26 the youths were walking the city’s street when they conspired to break into the salon, entering at 11.30pm through an unlocked rear window.

They ransacked the store, pulling out drawers, but after finding no money set about destroying everything — furniture, fittings and appliances.

Both youths are this morning expected to appear in court charged with arson and burglary.

The fire followed an unrelated blaze at Warrnambool’s Criterion Hotel on February 22 which extensively damaged the Kepler Street pub and led to 13 and 14-year-old youths being charged with offences.

How about charging the parents as well? If they were decent parents they would know where their 14 year old were and what they were doing. I say throw the parents behind bars well and they might take a bit more responsibility for the child's behaviour in future and actually give a damn about what they're doing.

It is about time that the legal system at Govt both State and Federal levels took note that the general public, the victims, insurance companies and the police are fed up with theft, vandalism, larceny, assault, alcohol and or drug related crimes. The victims suffer in more than the incident itself with damages, loss of income and physical injuries but then the have the psychological injuries, but then are hit by their landlords, insurance cost by claiming then increases, and often bankrupted by their creditors for their debts. To top this off if they then attempt to try to get compensation through the court system they are them made the victim again as in most cases walks away and so does any chance of getting the awarded judgement. The offences are being caused by mainly persons that because of age or social circumstance deemed not to be responsible be made responsible by putting a dollar value on the offences committed of say for example $5,000.00 be treated in the adult caught and all persons found guilty be named and photgraphed in the media

Maybe the parents were at work where they have to be fulfilling the governments participation requirements!! If parents were still allowed to be at home parenting, the majority would be. I have four teens that I am forced to leave in self care and to this day have been one of the lucky ones, they have not stepped out of line...yet! No matter though, when my daughter gets preggers and I don't want her to have it, the same govt will house her and give her $5k to have the baby :-) Kids need parents to show them the way, it can only get worse from here!!
