A childhood gift of a Mickey Mouse watch, a grandfather who loved The Beatles and a revival of an old TV show set Andrea Beeston on the road to becoming a serious collector.
Those early influences have stayed with Andrea who has developed terrific collections of Mickey Mouse, Beatles and Star Trek memorabilia.
She has more than 25 different styles of Mickey Mouse watches, including that very first gift from when she was about seven years old, stuffed toys, a phone, teapot, figurines, glasses and even a talking tooth brush with Mickey's image.
Andrea will share some of her special collections at the Western Region Alcohol and Drug Centre's Rotary Collectabool on April 3-4, at the Warrnambool Entertainment Centre.
She inherited some original 1960s Beatles albums from her grandfather "which got me hooked on them". Her collection of the Fab Four now includes toys, pins, posters, photos and other novelty items, along with autographs from John Lennon's ex-wife Cynthia and his son Julian.
Andrea's Star Trek collection warrants its own room, dubbed the Transporter Room, and was inspired by the Next Generation television series.
"I saw the show on TV in the 1980s and loved it, then discovered the novels and it kept going from there," Andrea said.
The room contains everything from a replica Star Trek uniform to a full collection of the series DVDs.
Among Andrea's favourite items are her original Mickey Mouse watch and a figurine of the Star Trek character Q.
"I really started on the collections from people giving me things," she said.
Andrea still enjoys the thrill of finding a new item for her collections and likes to check out second hand shops and online auctions when she can.
Rotary Collecta-Bool is a fund-raiser for the Western Region Alcohol and Drug Association.
Organiser Rick Bayne said more than 30 individual collections had been confirmed for this year's event.
These include speedway memorabilia; vintage records; AC/DC; Kiss; radios; perfume bottles; beer glasses; Australian movie memorabilia and James Bond cars; mystery items; fire brigade memorabilia; toys; swap cards, and many more.
