Son of a musical gun ready for Port Fairy gig

09 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
THE countdown to the Port Fairy Folk Festival is well and truly on.

The clock on the official website says there is 28 days to go until the the 36th annual event kicks off and there are still some tickets left, including some discount ones available until February 16.

The best way to book tickets is through www.portfairyfolkfestival.com or by calling the box office on 55682227. Still undecided? Here are some good reasons to go:

Adam Cohen: The son of Leonard, Adam’s songwriting skills are being favourably compared to his dad’s, which is a big compliment.

Ahab: Posited as the next Mumford & Sons, this British alt-country group has been getting the music press in their homeland very excited.

Archie Roach: After a rough couple of years, this local singer-songwriter understands the healing power of music like few others do.

Blue Heat: Even if you’ve seen these local blues legends before, there’s nothing quite like catching them on a big stage in full festival mode.

Clare Bowditch: With each passing year, this ARIA winner comes closer to being a national treasure.

Eagle & The Worm: A hip Melbourne eight-piece with a love of old pop sounds.

Eric Bibb & Staffan Astner: Bibb is a hit every time he plays the Folkie. With fellow guitarist Astner in tow, you’ll hear him play the blues like never before.

Frigg: This Finnish seven-piece boasts four fiddlers and a dynamic stage show.

Harry Manx: By blending the blues with string sounds of the East, Canadian Manx has become a legend and is a welcome returnee to the Folkie.

John Butler: A rare opportunity to see Butler solo, which will help remind you how awesome he is as a guitarist (in case you’d forgotten).

Judy Collins: This American singer-songwriter is a contemporary of Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, emerging from the same folk scene 50 years ago.

Lanie Lane: Sounding and looking like she’s out of a bygone era, there is big buzz about this Aussie talent and her sassy country sounds.

My Friend The Chocolate Cake: Continuing the tradition of fine Australian pop songwriting are these revered ARIA-winning legends.

Sharon Shannon Big Band: One of Ireland’s biggest-selling artists, Shannon is a genre-hopping accordionist and regular visitor to the south-west.

Tripod: This Australian musical-comedy trio is as hilarious as it is musically talented, and that’s saying something.

Watussi: A melting pot of genres, this exciting group merges South American sounds roots, reggae, rap and rock.
